Ethical Responsibilities to Children

P-1.2—We shall care for and educate children in positive emotional and social environments that are cognitively stimulating and that support each child’s culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure.

I-1.11—To provide all children with experiences in a language that they know, as well as support children in maintaining the use of their home language and in learning English

I found the 2 codes very meaningful to me. These codes make the child aware that there is a connection between home and school. The teacher should make the children feel comfort so that learning can happen. Being that I work in a mixed community, African Americans and Hispanic, I provided all the text in my preschool classroom in both languages, English and Spanish. 

 

Ethical Responsibilities to Families

P-2.2—We shall inform families of program philosophy, policies, curriculum, assessment system, and personnel qualifications, and explain why we teach as we do—which should be in accordance with our ethical responsibilities to children.

When I first started teaching, some of my parents mentioned that “play” shouldn’t be a part of the children’s curriculum, and how learning should be more teacher directed.  Once I explained the benefits of play and how it broadens their cognitive, social and emotional domains, they were more acceptable to the theory of play.
