My first unintended consequence was learning how poverty affects Early Childhood education in the United States as well as many countries.  The weekly research assignments allowed me to see how inequalities surrounding poverty affects the availability to educate children.  I have also learned how poverty affects children and families in my own demographic area.  The international connections and podcast have allowed me to see how Global organizations are assisting in ensuring that all children receive an early educational encounter.

The second intended consequence was learning more about the viewpoints of Early Childhood Education in other countries.  Generally, I really enjoyed communicating with others in foreign territories as well as meeting new people that are as passionate as me about educating young children.

My last unintended consequence was learning that our country, the United States of America, is changing the way that children are learning.  This is based on what children are learning globally. According to Dr. Grace, she has revealed that our educational standards are being devised from the top grade level down to Early Childhood so that our graduates will know the same things as other students are learning globally.

My goal is to continue to make a difference in the lives of children and their families.   There are many issues surrounding Early Childhood education that makes children feel not equal to others.  One of my professional goals is to open a business that caters to educating children and families in poverty and low-income neighborhood. I’ve enjoyed reading the weekly posts from my colleagues and I really appreciate the comments made on my posts. I’m wishing my colleagues good luck in continuing their professional and educational path at Walden University.

Sharing Web Resources

Save the Children.org is the second website that I choose due to not receiving newsletters from my first choice.  Some of the outside links lead me to different sites that pertained to the topic. It also gave definitions to term that some might not be familiar with, and a wealth of data that is related to the topic. One area that I search thoroughly is the Donation section.  Save The Children website offers multiply ways for people to donate their money.  You can donate one time or on a monthly basis, make a gift donation or memorial gift, sponsor a child, corporate matching, workplace giving to name a few.  Since I haven’t received an e-newsletter I decided to look at some of the blog inquiries about Save the Children website. Some of the blogs talked about what and how can Save the Children do for their schools. Save the Children was placed in some schools to… provide support in order to improve the quality of education, by providing workshops where teachers can learn new teaching techniques that will be applied to children in their school(Savethechildren, 2014).  By exploring this week website, I discovered that bring awareness to issues and trends in the early childhood field is one way for people to become mindful of what is going on.

Sharing Web Resources

The information that seemed particularly relevant to my current professional development is the way that Save the Children is trying to raise money for the children and families in South Sudan because of famine.  The issue that I found to be controversial is the fact that money needed in order to get resources.  Pete Walsh, Save the Children’s Country Director in South Sudan, expressed that “We urgently need to raise funds to provide families with lifesaving food supplements…They need help and if we wait any longer, I fear all hope will be lost.” When Mr. Walsh stated that the organization needs to quickly raise money to help people in South Sudan, that statement added to my understanding of how economists is needed.  Other insights that I got from this website is that donating money can have such a positive outcome for many children and their families.

Sharing Web Resources

The name of the organization that I selected is NBCDI which stands for National Black Child Development Institute.  The link to their website is http://www.nbcdi.org/.  The mission of this institute is to educate and provide advocacy for Black children and their families in order to improve and advance their quality of life. The main focus for this organization has been on achieving positive outcomes for vulnerable children who suffer from the dual legacies of poverty and racial discrimination. One current issue from the website that caught my attention is that they have a section that is titled Child Health Talk.  Under this heading they will be discussing the lasting impact of mentoring black boys.

The country that I decided to read about is South Africa. Some insights that I learn about from my reading are:

The Unicef report found that 1.4 million children live in homes that rely on often dirty streams for drinking water, 1.5 million have no flushing lavatories and 1.7 million live in shacks, with no proper bedding, cooking or washing facilities (Laing, A 2012).

Apartheid is a reasons child poverty is high in South Africa. Racially discriminatory policy has resulted in very high levels of inequality, with many of today’s black children inheriting the inequalities and omissions of the previous government (STWR, n.d.)

Another reason for child poverty in South Africa is the extremely elevated level of unemployment in the country. It sought to make itself attractive to foreign investment and to expand trade by opening markets and reducing trade barriers (STWR, n.d.) These approaches deepened the already high levels of unemployment as the country lost jobs in sectors that struggled to compete in the global market, such as the agricultural and manufacturing sectors STWR, n.d.)

Relationship Reflection

The reason why having relationships with people are very important to me because it is a way of connecting to individuals.  When connecting with other you tend to be a happier person than by yourself.   Relationship also has validation of your self-worth and security.  The people that I have positive relationships with are my mother, children and my best friend.  The way in which me and my mom maintain our relationship remains positive is because of a common dominator we share, our children. As a mom, I can see the struggle she went thru raising me and my siblings the respectable way.  I can’t believe that I’m saying this but I’ve known my best friend for over 25 years.  She is like another sister to me.  Growing up we shared everything from clothes as youths to advice as an adult. Some challenges that I have experience over time in regards to forming a relationship is the time it takes to build.   Relationships are not built overnight.  It may take years to really feel secure with sharing your personal information with others.  My experiences with relationship have greatly benefited me in my employment as an early childhood professional.  As an educator, collaborating is one of our main tools in becoming better teacher.
